The Mamma Coach Guide to Lockdown Aroma Help

I qualified in Aromatherapy back in 2000. I did a year Diploma which included Aromatherapy Massage and the study of 70 essential oils including their application and how they affect the body. It was EPIC! I studied hard and loved every minute…. but never really worked much as a massage Aromatherapist.

HOWEVER, what I did was learn to tap into my inner white witch (I can even do a wicked witchy laugh that my boys LOVE me doing because it freaks the pants off them), and get creating and making beautiful blends for my family, friends, therapy clients, and of course, ME.

I make my own hand lotions, body lotions, face creams, bath oils, face oils, room sprays, perfumes and vaporisers and relish in the profound effects they have on myself, my family, my clients and my environment.

I incorporate aromatherapy into just about everything I can, including my classes and most recently into my Beyond Birth Group Sessions, which parents and babies adore and I find so rewarding to see the benefits of straight away.

Here’s a little lesson in how it works, and why it can help you:

How does it work?

When we breathe essential oils in, the olfactory nerve is activated and it has a direct impact on our emotional brain, bypassing our critical mind, so it can affect our emotional temperament and mood fast without being too “judgy”. So we don’t get the chance to wonder too much about the smell, because, well, it’s already taking affect. Bingo!

Aromatherapy impacts our emotional and physical states, has the power to evoke strong memory and triggers our inner systems for:

  • Calm

  • Soothing

  • Invigorating

  • Clarifying

  • Cleansing

  • Uplifting

  • Sleep/Rest

  • Digestion

  • Muscular relaxation

When breathed in, and when applied to our skin, each oil has a different chemical affect on the body and responds directly with our organs, cells and general inner flow. Each oil has different properties that have affinities with certain parts of our body. So some are good for the head, some the heart, some the digestion, some our hormones, mood, etc. They really are quite magical!

Here are 3 of the Room Spray recipes I’ve been using at home during lockdown to help clear energy, cleanse the environment, concentrate, relax, calm and soften.

They’ve helped me hugely with antibacterial properties, cleansing nasty smells away (my boys!), focusing on my work, and switching off at the end of the day - even helping to clear the air after arguments!

You don’t need to be an expert to blend

But always check you are blending according to advice like this or get your blends from an expert.

Be safe!

Don’t apply neat to the skin (unless it’s tea-tree or lavender, but only for an adult)

Only use according to instructions

Don’t drink it unless it’s prescribed - that’s not allowed in the UK, but you can in France

Only use 1% blend in pregnancy or near children under 3.

There are some oils NOT suitable for use in pregnancy, or those with some skin and health conditions (always check first - DR Google will tell you FAST).

It’s not great to use oils on a new baby up to 6 months old, but they can be used sparingly when spritzed in a water spray, breathed in from a tissue or added to a bath for a parent - not the baby.

Always buy quality oils, some are adulterated and not the genuine deal. (I get mine from Absolute Aromas and have done for the past 20 years!)

Want to know more?

I often integrate aromatherapy into my coaching and therapy sessions with clients and they always say how much they get from it.

Aromatherapy isn’t just a nice smell. These oils are powerful resources from nature that can heal, but they must also be respected as they can harm too.
