Five reasons to add mental wellbeing to perinatal classes

I love teaching and coaching couples in pregnancy and parenting. You probably already know that right? I mean I have been doing it for over 14 years so it’s got to be making me happy!

It does make me happy, and inspired and excited and motivated to help as many parents and babies as I can across the world to have the best start to life and to continue to connect throughout their journey together.

I have taught courses, workshops, one to ones, locally and online worldwide and my goal is always the same; to help parents and babies feel more connected through mental wellbeing and connection. The one thing it all comes back to is the simple fact that we are hardwired for connection and that affects our mental wellbeing (and physical). The more love and connection you feel for yourself as a parent, the more love you have to give to your baby and the more your baby will grow with love. Simple but true.

So here are my top 5 reasons to add mental wellbeing to your perinatal offerings;

  1. Parental depletion and other mental health issues is a growing problem. Parents mental wellbeing is being rocked by more and more pressures and we need to do something about it now before it’s a more serious problem. Prevention is better than cure! If parents considered themselves first, and took time to consider their needs, the ripple effect would work and their children would benefit for life.

  2. Infant and parental mental health matters for life, but we don’t consider this as we prepare for our lives with a new baby. By including mindful early parenting groups to your agenda, you can create community, support and a space for parents to talk, be heard and to listen. You can make an impact and help provide the missing nurturing care that new parents need. You can watch babies and their parents uncurl and grow with love. It’s a joy to be a part of and I love to nurture my parents and babies equally. Again, deeper connections creates a lifetime of love and emotional regulation.

  3. Mental wellbeing promotes deeper connections and awareness. It’s as important as physical wellbeing, and the simplest of skills learnt make a massive impact on parents and their babies as they start their lives together, helping to build resilience, compassion and understanding.

  4. Parents struggling with the challenges of early parenting such as sleep deprivation, loss of identity, low mood, feeling disconnected and worried they are not good enough or failing, (so most parents then!), will learn ways to reflect, be mindful and soften into it all more. Being part of this journey with them also helps in your self development and is extremely rewarding to see people thinking and feeling more positively.

  5. Parents will have the chance to connect with others in the group and you for longer, and it helps to normalise some of the issues that wouldn’t normally be talked about, which can help people feel less alone, and more “in it together”, boosting confidence and self worth. If you fall in love with Beyond Birth like I have (and my clients), you will never “work”. You will play, and empower and create and inspire and transform the lives of those around you. These groups are an absolute pleasure.
